Language Notes

Garlic: This is an important spice in foods the world over, from Italy to China.

Kabob: A kabob is a stick with foods such as meats and vegetables served on it. The word came from the Eastern Mediterranean, but many cuisines feature similar dishes. In Thailand, spicy satay is sold, often at small stands along the street. In Japan, people eat yakitori, which is chicken with special teriyaki sauce served on sticks. In some places, yakitori restaurants cook the dish on small grills and the smoke is blown out onto the sidewalk, making it difficult to walk by without stopping to buy some.

Vegetarian: This is a person who doesn't eat meat, as in She is a vegetarian. The word can also be an adjective, as in Many Buddhists are vegetarian, or an adjective meaning food with no meat, as in This restaurant serves vegetarian food.

English for Foods and Cooking: Learn the English needed to talk about foods and cooking. This new book from Targets in English will explore the language around meats, vegetables, fruits, and common Western dishes. English for Foods and Cooking, which will include conversation, vocabulary, grammar, idioms, slang, and delicious photos, will be released this fall.
