It's a horrible thing to have an urge for pizza, but you don't want to buy a whole pie. It's very common on the East Coast of the United States to find pizza sold by the slice. You also see pizza sold this way at fairs and other special events.

Slice: To slice means to cut with a knife. The word is used for pizza, bread, meat, and other foods. It can also be a noun, as in a slice of pizza or a slice of bread. For pizza, you can also use the word piece, as in Have another piece of pizza.

By the: This phrase tells how something is sold, as in by the slice or by the bag.
